Freedom of Speech Egyptian Style

Posted by Paul Chislett on February 26, 2007

In Canada it is common to voice criticism – often in very cutting ways – towards leaders and religious and cultural ideas. The best of such criticism is directed toward injustice, or in taking on Goliath in the Name of David.

Egyptian blogger Kareem Nabeel Sulaiman (click on link for blog site) was recently sentenced to three years in prison for blogging opinions which were critical of President Hosni Mubarak and an additional one year for blasphemy against Islam. If that were the case in Canada, the prisons would be quite full, to state the obvious.

Freedom of speech is a fundamental right. Freedom to voice opinion is essential in this day and age of privacy laws that are talked about in Canada which may not be just about security.
