Electoral reform is needed to restore democracy

Canadians like to think we live in a democratic country. But do we really? The Green Party will get just as many votes overall as, say the Liberals in Atlantic Canada, yet the Greens win no seats and the liberals win 22. Our electoral system is so out of date as to make it irrelevant.

And so many people don’t bother to vote. NDP MP, Catherine Bell is helping to change this situation. But we need to care. A system of proportional representation – as practised in some form or another – exists in most major democracies.

We need such a system as it will provide the means for every vote to count. That way, no one has an excuse to not vote, AND we will avoid majority governments which come to power with way less than a majority of the popular vote – truly an undemocratic state of affairs.
